things I will miss when I leave the UK: #1

Potato farl: a thin toast-sized breakfast food from Ireland.

Ant buys potato farls as a treat for a cooked breakfast. They are a flat bread made from mashed potatoes and a bit of flour and salt and griddle cooked. Ant eats his smothered in runny eggs, but I want mine unadorned so I can savour the mealy goodness. I have just had two with an egg and coffee; yum, yum. It makes them all the more delicious that they were served to me on a tray while I sat in bed with my laptop.

I am sure that many readers will comment (!) telling us what they miss about the UK now that they are gone. Ahem, ahem, Sarah, Jayme, Mum, Dad, Si. I'll tell you more of mine in future post as I seek to enjoy what I currently have, not unlike Micah, Anna, Justin, Matt, Bree, Matt, ahem, ahem.

I will miss lots of stuff but the first thing that springs to mind is BACON... when I was in Canada I was shocked at what passes for bacon there. I am sure there is somewhere I can get it in Canada... suggestions are welcome.

Also I just thought that I will miss the TV. There are of course shows here I will miss but I do like a lot of American shows too and I would still get them... but I think what I mean is the style of the television.

Ant, you hit two of mine on the head. My first would be TV and music, and being able to go to concerts, plays, etc. so easily.

Donald misses bacon (and we haven't been able to find proper bacon anywhere yet) and squash - not the vegetable, but that wierd concentrated juice-like stuff that you guys add water to...

I also miss pubs, proper fish and chips, and good public transport.

And New Look. And shopping in London. And free banking. And early spring. And British countryside. And castles, B&B's and short weekend breaks to interesting places.

Ok, quick, somebody remind me again why I came back to Canada...
Oh yes, being able to afford a house and family...

Do you think we could all get together and form our own country in the middle of the atlantic that had the best of both worlds? I feel now like my heart will be permanently torn between two countries.

Ah yes... I miss the grey rain and grey buildings. That is wha I remember about London.. oh and the bomb scares. In 1997 when I was there, a few bombs went off. On a more positive note - I miss the Burberry at the airport and the sheep on the hills in south Downs (Kevin showed me their picture) and I would like to see them. .

Not being a heathen myself, I can't support this idea that British bacon is worth anything -- indeed, the country has hardly any proper bacon to speak of. =)

What I will miss is spring. The slow and steady emergence of wave after wave of flowers; the massive flowering trees in bloom; the slow warming of each day; the dramatic lengthening of sunlight.

The maritimes have stunning, dramatic falls, with hideous, slushy, springs. The fall in the UK is short and boring, no drama and no splendour in death. But the spring is so alive with growth and measuredness. What a lovely metaphor, to see the earth once again set foot in front of foot and begin anew with calm and with force.
